After a snack (Jamal) and a good long rest (also with Jamal) Damian felt much more prepared to deal with the evening. First he met with Simon at the club, pulling him downstairs into the office. “Where did you put the body?”

“Akron.”

“Ah. Good.” He filled Simon in on his conversation with Detective Nova. “Ask around tonight. Look for anybody who might have known the victims..”

“Of course. And what about you?”

“Where do all depraved vamps end up sooner or later?”

“The Victorian.”

“Exactly.”

He left Simon to play detective at the club and drove his Lincoln across town, down Mack Avenue. As soon as he turned on to Fallow Row he knew things were not going well.

A cruiser sat parked across the narrow road, blocking access. Over a half dozen police and emergency vehicles were parked in front of the Victorian. People milled about—uniformed police officers and white-clad technicians. A small crowd of vamp tramps huddled around an ambulance, and there were several people in the backs of the patrol cars, including Lurch and his wife. Damian pulled over and got out of the Lincoln. A uniformed officer stood next to the car blocking the road.

“What’s happened?” Damian asked.

The officer gave him a sizing look. “Name?”

“Damian.”

“The Damian?” the cop asked.

“Yes. Who’s in charge here?”

Nova’s voice floated over the crowd. “Who do you think?” She marched over to them and motioned for him to follow her. She only stepped a few paces before she turned to glare at him. “I’ve got two vampires chowing down in murder rooms and three bodies buried in the basement. One of them matches our killer’s MO.”

“Very interesting,” he said, keeping his voice bland.

“Come off it, Damian. You know every blood den in the city. Why else would you be here?”

“Just passing through.”

“If we weren’t surrounded by dozens of witnesses I would smack you.”

“Detective, if you ever want to play, all you have to do is ask.” He was pushing it. If he wasn’t careful he would be in the back of a patrol car with the others. “The place is run by Lurch and Anjelica—vamp tramps willing to offer up their friends in exchange for some cash.” He didn’t give her any information she didn’t already know.

“They’ve been in and out of jail since the early nineties,” she said. “Prostitution, kidnapping…never managed to get them for accessory to murder, but this time—three people! Probably more, and you know all about it. Don’t say that you don’t!”

“No human being steps into a place like the Victorian without some sort of death wish,” Damian explained. “They may not realize it, or admit it, but if they step through those doors and go up the stairs, they want to die. No one coerces them, no one lies. They know. It’s consensual.”

“It’s sick.” Nova spat. “You frequent here often?”

“Of course not.” This was not a lie—he almost never went to the Victorian.

“I should take you in.”

“For what, being annoying? I have a very good lawyer. You remember what happened the last time you tried to book me for obstructing justice.
